Ten Things You Need to Do Before You File for Custody

  1. Pray for wisdom.
  2. Ask someone who has been through the process and who has kids who are now adults if they would do anything differently.
  3. Ask child(ren)  who may have gone through the process how they feel about being the subject of custody litigation.
  4. Ask adults who had parents who fought over their custody.
  5. Visit the courthouse and sit in on a custody hearing.
  6. Exhaust every other reasonable alternative to resolving the issue.
  7. Carefully examine your motives.
  8. Consult with people you respect and who also love your children about how you should proceed.
  9. Consult with a child psychologist about the impact  custody litigation has on children.
