What is the Hearsay Rule?

A rule that prohibits a witness from testifying about statements made by someone who is not a party to the proceeding. The hearsay rule is designed to ensure the integrity of the testimony presented in court. In a custody case, for example, the hearsay rule will prevent you from testifying about what your child told you about what happened during his visit with the opposing parent.
