Divorce laws are creatures of state legislatures. Each state has the the power to enact its own laws regarding the creation and the dissolution of marriages. Consequently, divorce laws are not uniform throughout the country, and what you have to do in the state where you live to get divorced may be completely different from what your friend in another state has to do.
